Lakewood Church shooting: Woman with child in tow opens fire inside Joel Osteen’s Texas megachurch

Two people were injured and one suspect was killed during a shooting at Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church on the afternoon, Texas authorities say.
During a press conference, police chief Troy Finner said that the shooting began at 1:53 p.m. It happened at around the time that the Spanish language church service was scheduled to start.
The suspect, who was a woman, entered the church with a long rifle. She was wearing a backpack and a trench coat, and was accompanied by a “small child, approximately 4 to 5 years old”, Finner said.
After she began shooting, off-duty officers at the scene “engaged” the woman and returned fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said that two people were injured, including a 57-year-old man who was shot in the leg. The child that the shooter came with was also injured and remains in critical condition.
Finner also disclosed that the suspect mentioned that she had a bomb.
Once she went down, officers reported back to us that she threatened that she had a bomb,” the police chief explained. “So we searched her vehicle, our bomb squad, and also the backpack [she brought].
No explosives were found, but she was also spraying some type of substance on the ground.
The death of the shooter was first announced by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez earlier that afternoon.
Correction: shooter is down,” Gonzalez wrote on social media. “But it does not appear that@HCSOTexas deputies fired shots; other agencies fired.”
We continue to assist in a methodical/thorough search of the complex
At around 2:10 p.m. CT, Gonzalez announced that there were “possible shots fired at/or around Lakewood Church.” Less than an hour later, Texas police confirmed that the scene was Lakewood Church.
Police later advised that anyone with missing family members should head to the “family reunification location” at Greenway Plaza’s Life Time Fitness gym.
Lakewood Church confirmed on X that there was a shooting and asked that users “please pray for Lakewood and our community.
In a press release sent to local outlets, Governor Greg Abbott called the shooting “tragic.”
“Our hearts are with those impacted by today’s tragic shooting and the entire Lakewood Church community in Houston,” Abbott said. “Places of worship are sacred
Fox News Digital reached out to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office and the Houston Police Department for comment.
Police said the shooting appears to be isolated and they believe there is no further threat to the public.

Times Square shooting: Teen migrant gunman on the loose after woman shot, firing on police

Long lens, crime scene. Detectives and officer in background.

A massive manhunt is underway for the gunman who shot a tourist and fired at an officer inside a store in Times Square.

Officials say officers responded to a shooting inside JD Sports just after 7 p.m. On the second floor of the store, the suspects started stealing clothing and possibly sneakers, placing the items into a bag, according to NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell.

Two of the three men then entered the lobby of the store, where a female loss prevention employee confronted them and asked for a receipt. She was able to take back the stolen property from then, Chell said.

Officials say one of the men, described by police as being between 15 and 20 years old, then took out a gun from a shoulder strap bag and fired once toward the loss prevention officer.

The bullet missed the officer and hit an innocent bystander who was shopping inside the store, striking her once in the leg.

The victim, a 37-year-old woman from Brazil, was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she is expected to survive.

The two men and the suspected gunman then fled the store.

Authorities say that at some point during the chase, the shooter shot twice at another officer, missing both times. The officer drew his gun but did not fire due to the number of people nearby, officials noted.

Officials say the suspect then ran into a subway station.

One of the three men was taken into police custody. Authorities say the 15-year-old stayed behind to talk to police and was released. He is a migrant resident of the Stewart Hotel, officials said.

“At this point we have numerous resources scouring this area looking for that male,” said Chell during Thursday night’s press conference. “He is the shooter. He shot at our cops not once, but twice and also shot an innocent female one time in the leg.”

Police are also looking to speak to a second person who was with the gunman.

5 US Marines confirmed dead after helicopter went missing in California

The five U.S. Marines aboard a helicopter that went missing on a trip from Nevada to California were confirmed dead on Thursday.

First responders found the crashed CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter following hours of searching, but they did not find the crew until Thursday morning.

“It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing and the “Flying Tigers” while conducting a training flight last night,” Maj. Gen. Borgschulte, Commanding General for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, said in a statement.

“These pilots and crew members were serving a calling greater than self and were proud to do so. We will forever be grateful for their call to duty and selfless service,” he added. “To the families of our fallen Marines, we send our deepest condolences and commit to ensuring your support and care during this incredibly difficult time.”

The U.S. military does not reveal the identities of deceased service members until at least 24 hours after all next-of-kin notifications have been made.

First responders are working to recover the remains of each of the Marines.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter had departed Creech Air Force Base in Nevada en route to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego Tuesday night.

Local first responders were first contacted regarding the incident early Wednesday morning. The San Diego Sheriff’s Office attempted to send a helicopter to begin the search immediately, but the aircraft was called off due to the “atmospheric river” storm hitting the area.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed that President Biden had been briefed on the situation.

The incident comes roughly two months after a U.S. Air Force Osprey crashed off the coast of Japan in December. All eight crew members aboard the craft were killed in the incident.

Another Osprey crashed in August 2023 with over 20 Marines aboard. Three service members were killed in that incident and about 20 were injured.

Los Angeles Fire Department uses helicopter to rescue man, dog from Los Angeles River

Emergency crews in California rescued a man after he jumped into a river to save his dog, which was swept away by rapids brought on by the city’s severe weather, officials said.

The Los Angeles Fire Department Air Ops responded to a section of the Los Angeles River at approximately 2:45 p.m, when they found the man who had become stranded after he “jumped in the flowing water,” they said.

Using a helicopter, crews hovered just over the river and lowered a firefighter to attempt the rescue. The crew member managed to grab the man, who was still conscious, and pulled him out of the rushing current to safety, video shows.

The dog “had managed to swim safely,” and both suffered minor injuries, LA Fire said. The man was transported to a local hospital, and the dog was taken to an animal shelter for treatment. After the rescue, LA Fire said the pup was “happy to be alive, and eager to reunite with his human.

Severe weather continues to plague Los Angeles, which has already left millions impacted across the city. Emergency crews have responded to multiple reports of power outages, fallen trees, roadway flooding and other roadway obstructions, officials said.

City officials have received more than 300 reports of landslides, more than 250 fallen trees and have said tens of thousands of people have lost power. Most of those that lost power have since been restored.

Our first responders have been actively responding to this historic storm since yesterday afternoon,” Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said on Monday. “I have spent time with our Fire Chief meeting with Angelenos impacted by the storm. The City has lept into action to protect our most vulnerable Angelenos and we will continue to work around the clock to help those in need throughout this storm.

The mayor’s office and the LAFD said in an advisory posted Monday that Angelenos should stay off the roads, especially near Beverly Crest, one of the most impacted regions of the city.

An evacuation order remains in effect for La Tuna Canyon Road, roughly within the area bounded by Horse Haven St. to the North, Martindale Ave. to the East, Penrose St. to the South and Ledge Ave. to the West. The area is subject to increased risk of significant flooding, mudslides, and sediment flow because of the burn scars left by the Land Fire that occurred in 2022,” LAFD said.

Temporary evacuation and shelters remain active across Sunland, Lake View Terrace and Burbank.

Jennifer Crumbley trial: Michigan jury finds school shooter’s mother guilty of involuntary manslaughter

A Michigan jury found Jennifer Crumbley, mother of Oxford High School shooter Ethan Crumbley, guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter in her historic criminal trial.
Jennifer and her husband, James Crumbley, were each charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting that left four students dead and seven others injured on Nov. 30, 2021. Jennifer will be sentenced on April 9.
James Crumbley is being tried separately. The Crumbleys are the first parents in U.S. history to stand trial for a mass school shooting.
“As a parent, you spend your whole life trying to protect your child from other dangers,” Jennifer Crumbley said on the witness stand Thursday while answering questions from the defense. “You never would think you’d have to protect your child from harming someone else. That’s what blew my mind. That was the hardest thing I had to stomach is that my child harmed and killed other people.”
Her defense team argued that she did not know her son was planning a school shooting and therefore shouldn’t be held accountable for Ethan’s crimes.
Meanwhile, the prosecution argued that Ethan’s many cries for help went ignored and that the then-15-year-old carried out the shooting using the gun his parents allegedly purchased for him as a gift.
Jennifer’s attorney, Shannon Smith, said the prosecution “cherry-picked evidence” to accuse Jennifer of involuntary manslaughter.
“It’s obvious real life is messy and complicated. And during this trial, I will openly admit that I’m a lawyer who messes up. … I am a human being, and so is Mrs. Crumbley, and that’s what this case is about. She’s not a perfect person or a perfect parent,” Smith said in her closing statements.
Smith added that the shooting “was clearly not foreseeable to Mrs. Crumbley.”
Prosecutors suggested Jennifer could have stopped the shooting before it happened when she arrived at Oxford High on the morning of Nov. 30, 2021, to meet with school counselors after Ethan was caught scrawling disturbing notes in class.
His notes included an image of a gun and the phrases “Help me,” “Blood everywhere” and “My life is useless,” along with a drawing of a gun.
“You could have been with him,” Oakland County assistant prosecutor Marc Keast said Friday.
“I could have, yes,” Jennifer Crumbley testified.
Ethan Crumbley pleaded guilty to murder and terrorism last year. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Instead of taking their son home, prosecutors said, Jennifer and her husband left him at school and went about their day. Ethan later took a gun from his backpack and shot a total of 11 people, four of whom died.
Prosecutors also said Ethan Crumbley made a 19-minute video the day before the shooting describing what he was going to do in school the next day.
After the shooting, the Crumbleys allegedly fled Oxford and went to Detroit following some initial questioning from police. U.S. Marshals eventually apprehended them days later on Dec. 4, 2021.
“The minute this shooting became public and ended up in the paper, in the media, Jennifer Crumbley started telling a story, and then she ran. And she didn’t run just because she was selfish. … She ran, and she started deleting text messages, and she started telling a different story because she knew she did something wrong,” Oakland County prosecutor Karen McDonald said in her closing statements.

Shooting at Denver party leaves 2 dead, 4 wounded after confrontation with uninvited guests

A shooting erupted during a late-night party at a home in Denver when uninvited guests showed up leaving two people dead and wounding four others, authorities said.

A 26-year-old man and boy were killed, Denver police spokesman Sean Towle said. Three adult males and a fourth male whose age has yet to be determined were hospitalized, with one remaining in critical condition. Police did not immediately identify the victims or release the age of the boy.

The shooting was reported at 1:23 a.m. in the 5000 block of North Orleans Court in northeast Denver’s Green Valley Ranch neighborhood.

Towle said the shooting did not appear to be random.

The confrontation appeared to unfold after a group of people who were not invited showed up to the party, according to police. The conflict escalated to gunfire, with evidence showing multiple shots being fired from multiple firearms.

The boy who was killed did not appear to have been involved in the confrontation, police said.

A neighbor told FOX31 Denver that the shooting at the home left them “terrified.”

“The whole reason we got cameras is cause we feel unsafe and we just want to feel safe in this neighborhood,” the neighbor said. “It’s crazy to think someone my age was doing something malicious.”

The investigation remains ongoing. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been named

The 2024 Grammy Awards are here with SZA, Phoebe Bridgers and Victoria Monét leading the nominations

The 66th Grammy Awards are set to take place Sunday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, and there’s a lot to be excited about.

Women outpace men in the major categories, so expect to see a spotlight on its female nominees.

“That’s the same throughout the show, really — it’s dominated by women,” Grammys executive producer Ben Winston told The Associated Press. “That is something we’re really celebrating,” his fellow EP Raj Kapoor added. “It’s almost unprecedented.”

Comedian Trevor Noah will host for a fourth year in a row, history could be made, and unlike those other award shows, the Grammys doubles as a concert featuring the biggest artists in the world.

The main show will air live on CBS and Paramount+ beginning at 8 p.m. Eastern. Paramount+ with Showtime subscribers can watch live and on demand. Paramount+ Essential subscribers won’t be able to stream the ceremony until the next day.

E! will broadcast its “Live From E!: Countdown to the Grammys” show, with a mix of fashion coverage and celebrity interviews starting at 6 p.m. Eastern, hosted by Laverne Cox and comedian Heather McMahan.

The Associated Press will also stream a three-hour red carpet show with interviews and fashion footage. It will be streamed on YouTube, Twitter and the AP’s website beginning at 4 p.m. Eastern.

SZA is the lead contender with nine nominations, followed closely by Victoria Monét and Phoebe Bridgers with seven. Bridgers’ band boygenius has six, as does Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Miley Cyrus, Billie Eilish, Brandy Clark, Batiste and producer Jack Antonoff.

“Barbie” fans have a reason to celebrate. Just like its performance at the box office, the film will make its presence known at the Grammys: Music from the hit film’s soundtrack earned 11 nominations, including nabbing four of the five slots in the visual media song category.

There are a few history-making opportunities as well: A Black woman hasn’t won album of the year since 1999, when “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” was awarded the top prize. This year, SZA or Janelle Monae could change that.

If Taylor Swift takes home album of the year, she breaks the record of the artist with the most wins, ever, with four. Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus may win their first Grammys.

If Victoria Monét ‘s “Hollywood” wins best traditional R&B performance, her 2-year-old daughter Hazel will become the youngest Grammy winner. Karol G could become the first female artist to ever win in the best música urbana album category if she wins for “Mañana Será Bonito.” Jack Antonoff could tie Babyface as the producer with the most consecutive wins in the producer of the year, non-classical category with a third win in 2024.

A lot of people! The list includes: SZA, a first-ever Grammys performance from Joni Mitchell, and five-time Grammy winner and 23-time nominee Billy Joel.

The lineup also includes Grammy winners and current nominees Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa, Burna Boy, Luke Combs and Travis Scott.

Georgia girl, 8, dies after she was hit by car at bus stop, driver arrested for vehicular homicide

A Georgia girl died from injuries she suffered when a driver ran her over as she was attempting to board a school bus, and the driver has been arrested in connection with the child’s death.

The eight-year-old girl was attempting to board a Henry County School bus on Thursday on Jackson Lake Road, at the intersection of a private driveway, when the driver of a Ford Fusion plowed into her, Georgia State Patrol said, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.

State Patrol said the bus had its red flashing lights activated, and that the stop signs on both the front and rear were displayed.

Following the crash, the girl was airlifted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators announced that the girl had succumbed to her injuries.

The driver who hit the girl was identified as 25-year-old Kaylee Andre, who was booked into the Henry County Jail on charges of first-degree vehicular homicide, failure to stop for a school bus loading and unloading and failure to exercise due care.

Andre’s windshield had been iced over, and she allegedly did not scrape all the ice off, which partially obstructed her view.

Taylor Swift cheers on Kansas City Chiefs and goes out with the girls before resuming her Eras Tour

Taylor Swift was among the thousands of Kansas City Chiefs fans recently celebrating the NFL team’s berth in this year’s Super Bowl.

The “Anti Hero” singer rushed the field after the AFC chapionship win, immediately pulling boyfriend Travis Kelce into an embrace and later sharing a kiss.

Swift has been a fixture at Chiefs’ games since September 2023, and the couple’s every move has been closely watched, especially the “Midnights” star’s.

Here’s a look at a few times Swift has turned heads since going public with her and Kelce’s relationship when she’s not performing for her wildly successful Eras Tour.

Since attending her first Chiefs game in September 2023, Swift has gotten closer to Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The two are often photographed together watching games and cheering on their men. Their friendship has extended beyond the football stadium. The two have been spotted out to dinner multiple times with a group of girlfriends or on their own.

During one of the games, cameras captured Swift and Brittany celebrating with a secret handshake. Patrick later told CBS This Morning, Swift is “part of the Chiefs kingdom” at this point, admitting her handshake with Brittany is “better than [his] and Travis’.”

“It’s cool that she’s embraced Brittany, and they’ve built a friendship as well,” Patrick told the outlet in December 2023. “So, for me, it’s Travis, man, and he’s lucky enough to be with a great girl and a great woman, and it’s been cool to interact with her.”

Swift has fully embraced the role of a football player’s girlfriend, attending Kelce’s games in full Chiefs gear on multiple occasions. Her presence at the games has created some controversy. Many fans are annoyed she takes up so much screen time during game broadcasts.

“There’s a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don’t know where it is, and you have no idea when the camera is putting you in the broadcast, so I don’t know if I’m being shown 17 times or once,” she told Time magazine in December 2023.

“I’m just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads and Chads.”

David Letterman, former host of “The Late Show,” stood up for the singer, telling all the haters to “shut up” in a video he posted on social media, adding that Swift and Kelce are bringing “something positive and happy for the world.”

In the video, Letterman refers to Kelce as actor Kelsey Grammer.

When she’s not supporting her man or hanging with other WAGs while she’s on a break from touring, Swift is with her pals, including actress Blake Lively.

The two were spotted out together in New York in early January. Swift was wearing a velvet green dress and patterned knee-high boots, and Lively was wearing a multicolor striped sweater and a brown miniskirt.

In November 2022, Lively’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, told Entertainment Tonight his entire family is “obsessed” with Swift and her “Midnights” album.

Later that month, Swift thanked Lively when she won favorite pop album at the American Music Awards after Lively directed her in the music video for “I Bet You Think About Me,” calling her “my beautiful, brilliant friend” and “my director.”

The singer walked the red carpet at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards in a shimmering green dress and diamond earrings.

She was there as a nominee in the award show’s newest category, cinematic and box office achievement, for her concert movie, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.” The movie grossed over $261 million at the worldwide box office, raking in $93 million its opening weekend. Ultimately, the movie lost to the summer’s biggest blockbuster, “Barbie.”

Swift has been nominated at the award show four times in the past in the best original song category. Her first nomination came in 2013 for the song “Safe & Sound,” which she wrote for “The Hunger Games,” and her last nomination was in 2023 for her song “Carolina,” which she wrote for “Where the Crawdads Sing.”

Swift was spotted on a night out in the Big Apple in late January, wearing a long hooded sweater dress and a black coat.

The singer is getting ready for the 2024 Grammy Awards. She is nominated for four awards, including best pop vocal album and album of the year for “Midnights” and record of the year and song of the year for “Anti-Hero.”

While Swift will likely be by Kelce’s side during his big moment at the Super Bowl, her boyfriend will not be able to attend the Grammys as her date.

“I wish I could go support Taylor at the Grammys and watch her win every single award that she’s nominated for. But I think I’ve got practice on Sunday,” he said during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” in January. “Unfortunately, I’ve gotta get ready for this big old Super Bowl that we’ve got in a week.”
