Two children have died following a fire at a condo in Palm Bay early the morning, authorities said.
The Palm Bay Fire Department responded to the Country Garden complex on Sunny Brook Lane after receiving a call about the blaze at 12:40 a.m.
Officials confirmed that a 10-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 5-year-old child was rushed to an Orlando hospital and later died from their injuries.
A 32-year-old woman, identified as the children’s mother, was taken to a local hospital in critical condition with severe burns. A 15-year-old was able to escape the residence unharmed and is now safe with family.
The fire occurred in a second-floor unit that was “fully engulfed with entrapment,” according to the Malabar Fire Department, which assisted with the response.
Crews were able to contain the fire to that unit, though a unit below sustained water damage.
Palm Bay Fire Rescue confirmed that all firefighters are safe, although one sustained minor injuries that did not require transport.
