Parent shot and killed during basketball tournament at south suburban high school

One person was shot and killed in the parking lot of Hillcrest High School during a basketball tournament on the afternoon.


Officials said the Prairie-Hills Junior High boys basketball team was participating in a basketball tournament when a “targeted dispute led to a shooting.
The school district said the victim was a parent attending the game from a “neighboring community.”


“Our deepest condolences go out to the family, loved ones, and all those affected by this heartbreaking event. The incident is currently under investigation, and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement,” the school district said in a statement. “As this remains an active police matter, we are unable to share further details at this time. We respectfully ask that any inquiries be directed to the Country Club Hills Police Department. The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community continue to be our highest priority. Counselors and support resources are available for anyone in need during this difficult time.”


Later at the night, the Medical Examiner confirmed to WGN News the shooting was deadly.
A school district administrator will be available over the weekend to ensure students and families receive immediate support. Counseling services will also be available for students and staff when school resumes
“Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this serious incident and we recognize violence is an issue in our community and we will work with Bremen Township High School District 228, Country Club Hills Police, and other civic leaders in all of our municipalities to ensure our students have a safe environment,” Supt. of Schools Dr. Kinasha Brown said.
Parents are asked to reach out to school counselors, administrators or the district office if they or their child(ren) need help during this time.
