The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is still trying to figure out what exactly happened in the early morning

“The more people that we can talk to, the better chances we have of bringing this to a quick conclusion,” said Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom.

Victim identified in fatal birthday party shooting in Southport

21-year-old J’Sean Williams was gunned down at his own birthday party. Now, the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is working with the Elmira Police Department and New York State Police to find out who did this. Nearly 50 people attended the party. Sheriff Bill Schrom says there are multiple reasons why witnesses might not be willing to come forward.

“This was a party that served alcohol. I believe there were some other activities that were going on there. Some people might think that they’re going to get in trouble through law enforcement because they attended it. They might be in trouble, think they’re going to be in trouble through a parent if they found out they were actually there. And they just might be worried in general that, you know, they don’t want to be associated with it or identified as someone that talked to the police,” said Schrom.

Even the smallest bit of information can help the investigation.

“No one person has any one significant piece of information. There’s a lot of people that have information pointing in the same direction. So, it’s a little bit different when it’s a big group and there’s a lot of people that can provide that information we’re looking for as opposed to it all falling on one person’s shoulder. It’s very important that anybody at that party, even if they left prior to the shooting, to reach out to us because there might be information that they might not think is relevant, but would be very relevant to our investigation. So, the longer it takes for us to talk to everybody, the bigger delay the family has for justice for their son,” said Schrom.

The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office is also asking businesses or people in the neighborhood of Richard Street to check their surveillance or doorbell cameras. It’s looking for  any activity between 12:30 and 1:30 a.m. on November 15. If anything can be seen on those cameras they are asked to come forward. 18 News reached out to Southport Town Supervisor Joe Roman and City of Elmira Police Chief Kristen Thorne to talk about witness cooperation in this case, but we have not heard back.
