PEORIA (WEEK) — The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Peoria teamed up with Peoria Firefighters for a ‘National Drill Day’ event.

The firefighters taught the children the importance of having a working smoke detector and how to escape a fire.

Program Director, Chanel Hargrave-Murry, said the community coming together to help the children is what their organization is all about.

“They gladly came,” Hargrave-Murry continued, “And we just wanted the kids to kind of start building a relationship with some of our local firemen and we also just wanted them to come and hangout with the kids. I think it’s a great idea.”

The firefighters said people should get on the ground, find a wall and crawl alongside it to escape a burning building.
