New lifeguard training program for local students

PEORIA (WEEK) – After a experiencing a shortage of lifeguards this past summer, Peoria Public Schools is keeping its head above water with an alternative solution.

According to a press release sent Friday, PPS will now be training some of its current high school students to become lifeguards through the “Earn While You Learn” program.

Students from across the district will receive swimming and strengthening instruction to prepare them to pass the lifeguard certification test.

The students will be led by Pete Thomas, who is an instructor at Knoxville Center for student success. Students will also be paid for their training.
