SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The vaccine deadline for Illinois healthcare workers, educators, and college students is Sunday. That means people still have time to get their shot this weekend.

Healthcare and education leaders previously asked the governor to give them a two-week extension to implement vaccine and testing protocol. That deadline is September 19.

Workers and students must receive the first dose of a two-dose vaccine or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Anyone getting the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine must have their second dose within 30 days.

People who refuse vaccinations must go through weekly COVID-19 testing. Those who cannot provide proof of immunization must follow the testing protocols to enter healthcare and educational facilities.

State employees in congregate care facilities

However, the vaccine deadline for all state employees in 24/7 congregate living facilities is now October 16. The administration initially set October 4 as the deadline for veterans’ homes, developmental centers, correctional facilities, and juvenile justice facilities. However, Gov. JB Pritzker pushed the requirement back through an executive order he issued late Friday.

Now, those state employees must have the first dose of a two-dose vaccine or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine no later than October 14. Those with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine must then get the second dose by November 18. The same rule applies to contractors and vendors for those facilities.

“We are attempting to try to get everybody vaccinated,” said Gov. JB Pritzker. “But we want them to go to the vaccination sites that are available to them. We’re not requiring them at private businesses. If private businesses want to do that, I certainly encourage it.”

The state gave 21,372 vaccines Thursday. 54.29% of people in Illinois are fully vaccinated.

Meanwhile, there 206 school districts throughout Illinois have now reported COVID-19 outbreaks. The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 128 outbreaks just last week.
