Search team finds body in Illinois River near Peru

PERU (WEEK) – A search team, led by several police, fire, and rescue agencies including the Bloomington Police Department, found an unidentified body in the Illinois River Saturday morning.

At 9:47 a.m., the body was found east of Illinois Route 251 bridge along the south river bank. The LaSalle County Coroner’s Office, LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office, Bloomington Police and the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services responded to the scene.

Several police, fire, and rescue agencies including the Peru Police Department, Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police, LaSalle County Emergency Management Agency, the Illinois Search and Rescue Council Members, Peru River Rescue, Ottawa River Rescue, Spring Valley River Rescue and the Utica Fire Department had conducted an organized search for missing ISU grad student Jelani Day throughout the LaSalle – Peru area.

The LaSalle County Coroner’s Office has not released the identification of the body found, and stated that it may take several days or weeks to confirm an identity.

An investigative autopsy is scheduled for Sunday.
