BLOOMINGTON (WEEK) – A man sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting two people and wounding two others in Bloomington just over two years ago will appeal his conviction, his attorney told 25 News on Monday.
Judge Casey Costigan had no option but to sentence Hammet Brown, 29, to the life sentence because Brown was convicted of killing more than one person.
Costigan rejected Brown’s self-defense claim at a bench trial earlier earlier this year. Brown testified murder victim Steven Alexander pulled a gun on him at an apartment complex in the 1200 block of Orchard Drive in June 2018.
Alexander, who was 18, and Taneshiea Brown, 20 and no relation to the defendant, were killed. Two other people were each shot in the leg and survived.
A public defender was appointed to represent Brown during the appeals process.
