PEORIA (WEEK) — The 95th annual Illinois State Skeet Tournament is taking place all weekend, and the Peoria Skeet & Trap club is the lucky host in 2021.

For three days, shotgun shooters are aiming at clay targets to determine who’s best in the Land of Lincoln.

Different clubs throughout Illinois host tournaments all year, but the state tournament is a chance for all of them to come together and go for the gold.

Contestants get 100 clay targets and try to hit as many as they can.

“In skeet, you’re actually shooting four different gauges of shotgun. From 12-gauge to 20-gauge, 28-gauge and 410,” Skeet & Trap Club member Kent Koshkarian said. “Over the course of the three days, we’re shooting all of those gauges trying to get the best score you can possibly get.”

Koshkarian said a big goal is to encourage young people to get into the sport, but he said it has been difficult lately because of the COVID-19 pandemic and a recent ammunition shortage.

The winner of the tournament gets a trophy, prize money and the title of state champion.
