WASHINGTON (WEEK) — The Washington community competed to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in the first ever Amazing Race Saturday.

16 teams of four kicked off the race with a crossword puzzle, then drove off in their cars to complete challenges around town.

Once the teams finished all the challenges, they ran back to the start.

The winning team took home a prize and all the funds from the race were donated to St. Jude for pediatric cancer research.

“Those of us on the committee have really worked hard to try to continue to raise funds so that we never have to have another child go to the hospital again,” organizer Jenny Juskiv said.

Treatments developed at St. Jude helped push the overall childhood cancer survival rate from 20% to more than 80%.

All the funds from Saturday’s event go back to St. Jude to help with research, treatment, travel and lodging for children.
