PEORIA (WEEK) — Peoria Firefighters weren’t sure if a lightning strike is to blame for a fire at an apartment near University Street on Wednesday evening.

PFD says they were called to Merle Lane around 7:30 PM.

When they arrived, the line connecting the building to the power pole had caught fire and spread to the second flood of the apartment building.

It then spread to the third floor as well, damaging to units by the time electricity flowing to the line was cut, allowing crews to put the fire out. PFD estimates the fire did about $100,000 in damage.

No one was hurt.

Flooding and power outages were reported across central Illinois as storms passed through the area Wednesday.

One power line didn’t break when a tree fell over onto it. That was on University around 6:30 PM. The tree was leaning onto the power line, and a Peoria Police car was blocking the road. It’s unclear if that area has been cleared as of 10:45 PM.
