PEORIA COUNTY (WEEK) — The family of the woman who was found dead in a ditch in Peoria County Sunday morning is speaking out. They say the man arrested for killing her, was her boyfriend.

Ashley Tankersley’s family gathered Tuesday night, holding and hugging each other after making her funeral plans.

“It was unbelievable for me, it was like, ‘Ashley who?'” said Omar Brooks, the father of one of Tankersley’s kids.

Tankersley, a 37-year-old mom of three children was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

“She didn’t deserve that in no kind of way, shape or form. Beautiful person,” said Tankersley’s father, Charles Webster.

Police said her body was found in a ditch in Brimfield.

35-year-old Joshua McGee is the accused killer. He is charged with two counts of first-degree muder.

Captain Chris Watkins with the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office said a 911 call and repeated “pinging” of a cell phone led to his arrest.

Her family said the two were dating.

“He flipped out on something that guess what? You’re regretting now,” said Webster.

Captain Watkins said as of now they do not know the motive.

Illinois State Police arrested McGee later Sunday afternoon after a two and a half hour standoff in Sangamon County.

Watkins said McGee’s father was at the rest area there, reportedly telling troopers that his son told him he had done something very wrong.

Brooks and other family members said Tankersley showed love and compassion to everyone she knew.

“She always smiling, helping everybody,” said Brooks.

Now, the Tankersley family wants to know how McGee had a gun after previous convictions.

According to the Peoria County records, McGee has a lengthy criminal history, including assault and weapons possession.

“She could have been here with her sons, her kids, her family,” said Brooks.

McGee is being held on a $1.5 million dollar bail and is due back in court next month.

Tankersley’s family has set up a GoFundMe for funeral costs.
