PEORIA (WEEK) — A local organization took time Saturday to give back to the community and provide middle school students with everything they need to start the school year.
Melanated People United teamed up with Trewyn Middle School in Peoria to host a special back-to-school giveaway event.
Notebooks, folders, papers, pencils and backpacks were just some of the items given out Saturday to students free of charge.
The whole initiative was privately funded by organization founder Marcus Miggins, who said this is something he has always wanted to do.
“Where I grew up, essential items such as paper and backpacks can be hard to come by at times. Especially if parents may be struggling,” Miggins said. “Even if it helps them get to the next paycheck, that helps. That’s why I think it is really important.”
School supplies weren’t the only giveaways – Melanated People United also provided students with free haircuts, snacks and snow cones to enjoy under the hot sun.
Trewyn Middle School principal Jennifer Rohwedder said an event like Saturday’s is perfect in preparation for the upcoming school year.
“We are really excited to just bring community back into the neighborhood and have everyone get excited about school and education,” Rohwedder said. “We had a really tough year last year, so this is going to be great for the families and the students.”
Nearly $2000 worth of supplies were given out to kids Saturday, and Miggins said it’s the first event put on by Melanated People – and it won’t be the last.
Trewyn Middle School will welcome its students back – along with their new supplies – on August 18.
