Man shot, killed by intended robbery victim in DeKalb

One man is dead and another is in custody following a shooting in DeKalb late at night.

The DeKalb Police Department say it happened in 1100 block of W. Lincoln Hwy. near NIU’s campus just before 11 p.m.

Officers say they were called to the area for reports of someone shooting a gun in a parking lot.

When officers arrived on scene, they found a vehicle crashed into a concrete retaining wall. The driver of the vehicle had been shot, police say. The driver was taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries, according to police. His name has not been released, but police say the 21-year-old man is from Aurora.

Authorities did provide more information on the shooting, however.

Police say a two men got out of a car in the parking lot and approached another man, later identified as Princeston Mack.

One of the men, the man who was later shot and killed, threatened Mack, according to authorities. As Mack was walking away, the decedent pulled out a gun and said he was going to rob Mack, police say.

That’s when Mack pulled out a gun and shot at the man who was threatening him. Police say the decedent ran back to his car and tried to drive away, but crashed into the retaining wall. A cause of death has not been determined at this time.

Mack was taken into custody this morning, police say. Charges against Mack are still pending, according to police.
