NORMAL (WEEK) – The operator of Carle BroMenn Medical Center in Normal is joining OSF HealthCare and UnityPoint Health in requiring all of its workers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

“The decision to request all Carle Health team members to get vaccinated was made carefully and follows our organization’s values and commitment to being a trusted health partner for the community,” Dr. James C. Leonard, Carle Health’s president and CEO, said in a news release.

Carle’s Chief Medical Quality Officer, Dr. Robert Healy, said, “as the country deals with mutations like the Delta variant and others, vaccination truly is the best way keep more people from getting sick.”

Nothing was said in the news release about a deadline to be vaccinated, or what disciplinary action might be taken against employees choosing not to get the vaccine. Over 70% of Carle’s more than 11,000 employees have already received the vaccine, the health system said.

Workers who have not received the vaccine are being asked to complete a COVID-19 vaccine form. They’re also being asked to comply with additional safety requirements including wearing an N95 or high-filtration mask while in Carle and Health Alliance buildings, and continued use of personal protective equipment (PPE) in all clinical spaces.

Carle is based in Urbana and operates several health care facilities in Central Illinois, including BroMenn in Normal.
