PEORIA (WEEK) – Peoria Mayor Rita Ali and former Peoria-area Congressman and U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood want federal infrastructure spending to include high-speed passenger rail service for Peoria.
In a news release, the mayor said she’s sent letters last week to area U.S. representatives, to make sure high-speed rail funding is included in an infrastructure bill.
Ali and LaHood will be speaking about the topic and meeting with reporters at Peoria City Hall on Friday.
“Investing in high-seed passenger rail creates jobs and connects major hubs, creating additional economic benefits,” the news release said.
LaHood, a former GOP lawmaker, served as Transportation Secretary in the Obama Administration from 2009 to 2013.
Amtrak does not serve Peoria. Springfield, Normal, and Galesburg provide the closest passenger train service.
