Peoria police officer shot while responding to late-night fight


PEORIA (WEEK) — Peoria police say an officer was hospitalized with a gunshot wound after responding to large fight in Peoria Sunday morning.

Police say around 12:15 a.m., a Peoria Police Officer in the area of the 600 block of Northeast Adams Street saw a large group fighting at the corner of Adams and Green Street.

The officer reportedly heard gunfire, and when he exited his vehicle, he was shot in the leg.

First responding officers to the scene transported the officer to a local hospital and officials say he is in stable

Police say minutes later, officers got word of a second victim who was transported to a local hospital with a gunshot wound. Police say the second victim suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Police say information gathered at the scene indicates the officer did not return fire.
