Donations needed to help 2 nonprofits after warehouse destroyed in large east Bakersfield fire

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Valley Feeding Project and the Morning Star Fresh Food Ministry are in need of donations to help recover from a devastating fire that destroyed the warehouse that both organizations were sharing.

A GoFundMe account was set up yesterday to help raise money so the Valley Feeding Project can rebuild. Organizers said some of the major items that were lost in the fire include: Tens of thousands of dollars worth of food, commercial freezers and refrigerators, two forklifts, two pallet jacks, a cash register, laptops and more.

Organizers said the Valley Feeding Project is in need of a place to receive and store pallets of dry goods, refrigeration space as well as a place for dry/cool storage.

Valley Feeding Project is a nonprofit that partners with the community to provide discounted food to Kern County’s most vulnerable populations.

Morning Star Fresh Food Ministry also has a donation page where residents can help feed a family and support the organization. The organization said it is in need of the following: Warehouse space, packing rollers, a forklift, hand jacks, dollies, 10-12 pallets and a folding table with at least four chairs.

There is also a QR code that people can use to donate:

Morning Star is a nonprofit that delivers food boxes to needy families on the fourth Saturday of every month.

The fire broke out on Wednesday night in the warehouse they shared on Sacramento Street in east Bakersfield. It took 35 firefighters several hours to put the large fire out. The warehouse was a total loss.

“Basically, it’s like starting over from scratch, like we started back in 2013 when we started with 32 families,” said Morning Star Founder/Director Brett Sill. “We’re back to that stage where we gonna have to start from the beginning.”

The fire is just the second setback for Morning Star. Last week, a man broke through the main gate at the warehouse and stole a $40,000 refrigerated box truck just purchased to expand its food distribution service. The thief and the truck have not been found.
