PEORIA (WEEK) – The Peoria Riverfront Museum is teaming up with OSF HealthCare for a new art gallery intended to inspire all who enter OSF St. Francis Medical Center.
The “Gallery of Saint Francis” will feature full-scale, high-resolution replicas of the world’s greatest artworks depicting Saint Francis of Assisi, starting with Giovanni Bellini’s masterpiece, “St. Francis in the Desert,” provided by The Frick Collection in New York. Bellini completed the work around 1840 and has been on display at the New York museum since 1915.
The replica hangs in the hospital’s main entrance hallway, and is meant to inspire patients, staff, and visitors, a news release said.
“Bellini is regarded as the most important Venetian painter of what is termed the ‘High Renaissance,’ the technological pinnacle of the Renaissance,” said Bill Conger, Peoria Riverfront Museum chief curator, in a prepared statement.
Representatives of The Frick Collection said the painting is a favorite of visitors to the New Work museum.
Additional artwork depicting Saint Francis will eventually be added to the gallery.
