MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) — Authorities have reopened a stretch of Georgia interstate in one direction and say they hope to reopen the other direction soon. Friday’s opening to westbound traffic on Interstate 16 came earlier than anticipated after crews made quick work of demolishing a damaged overpass. Officials say eastbound traffic could begin flowing by midnight. Authorities earlier had said the section of interstate could remain closed through next week after a crash knocked the overpass from its support beams. A tractor-trailer on Thursday struck the bridge with an elevated dump bed. Interstate 16 is the main route used by many people from metro Atlanta who travel to the Southeast seacoast.
