Girl dies after being hit during gun battle at party

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A teenage girl died after she was hit by gunfire during a gun battle between two people at a holiday weekend party in Ohio, police said.
Dayton police said officers were called at about 2 a.m. to a home and found a 13-year-old girl with a gunshot wound. The child was taken to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.
Lt. Jason Hall said the initial indications are that a gathering was taking place at the home attended by numerous adults and children, and two individuals got into an argument that led to an exchange of gunfire.
“We believe (it was) during this exchange of gunfire that the child was struck,” Hall said. “The child we believe to be absolutely innocent — had no part in this whatsoever — and was struck by errant gunfire.”
The girl was struck by the gunfire outside the home, where she resided, Hall said. Her name wasn’t released. A 20-year-old man is being sought for information in the case, he said.
Hall called it “absolutely tragic” that a child lost her life as a result of what he called “very reckless actions on the part of others.”
