A nanny who raped an 11 year-old boy and had his baby has been jailed for 20 years.
Marissa Mowry, 28, was handed the sentence on Wednesday after admitting sexual battery over the 2014 sex attacks. They saw her rape the boy at least 15 times over several months.
Mowry, of Hillsborough County in Florida, later gave birth to a son. Her victim – who Metro US has chosen not to name – is now 17 years-old and trying his best to raise the five year-old child with his family’s help.
Speaking after Mowry’s sentencing, her victim’s mother Nadean Campbell told the Tampa Bay Times: ‘We’re talking about a child that was 11. Not even a teenager. Eleven.’
‘I thought of her almost as a second daughter.’Campbell also expressed incredulity at Mowry’s excuse that the youngster was mature beyond his years.
She said: ‘To think of my son as more than a child?
‘I mean, we’re talking about a child who was 11.’
Campbell explained that her son takes his son to school in the morning, before going to school himself, then plays with him in the backyard after he gets home.
The youngster can no longer hang out with friends after school, because he is too busy with his child.
And the boy has struggled to find a girlfriend far more than his peers, with his mother saying: ‘Who wants to date a 17-year-old who has a 5-year-old?’
Despite the obstacles her son faces, Campbell says being a dad so young has ‘changed’ his life but not ‘ruined’ it, and that her son is an ‘amazing’ father.
Mowry first came into contact with her victim after being hired by the Campbells specifically to look after the boy.
She had previously worked for one of their relatives, and came highly recommended.
But Mowry began abusing the youngster in January 2014, and gave birth to their son.
The court heard that Mowry had ‘consensual sex’ with her victim, although sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 18 is considered statutory rape in Florida.
The abusive relationship continued for three years.
Nadean Campbell and her partner initially believed Mowry had had the baby with her boyfriend at the time.
But her son later told her what had happened, with a DNA test proving that the boy was her grandson.
After being reported to police, Mowry tried to blame her victim, claiming the child had forced himself on her.
She was eventually caught lying after police secretly recorded a phone conversation between her and her victim.
Mowry had originally faced life in prison, but struck a plea deal which saw her admit the charges she faced in return for a 20 year jail term.
She must also register as a sex offender for life after being released.
Mowry, who gave birth to another child fathered by her boyfriend while awaiting trial, has been stripped of any claim to that baby and the child fathered with the 11 year-old boy.
Campbell says she now fears for her grandson’s future because of the circumstances surrounding his birth.
She told Spectrum News: ‘One thing I do not want him to ever think is that he is predestined to have issues because of this.
‘Because it takes two parents and his other one is really awesome.’
And the grandmother also warned other parents to be vigilant with their own children.
She said: ‘We don’t think about females being predators usually.
‘I didn’t. And it cost me.’
