SALEM, Va. (AP) — Felony charges have been filed against a juvenile after two people were shot on the opening night of a local fair, police said.
Officers with Salem police who were patrolling at the Salem Fair heard gunshots around 9 p.m. on before they saw someone with a gun who they captured after a chase, The Roanoke Times reported.
According to police, one of the victims was also a juvenile, while the second victim was a man whose identity wasn’t released.
The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released except to say the person is younger than 16, is being held at the Roanoke Detention Center on multiple charges, including two counts of malicious wounding. Their status couldn’t be determined on Thursday.
Both victims were taken to the hospital, police said. One victim had non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released, while the other victim remains hospitalized in stable condition, according to police.
The Salem Fair posted on Facebook that it remains open for business under regularly scheduled hours. New safety measures to be implemented will subject patrons to bag checks at gate entry, and children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
