Police identified Michelle Jordan Cummings, 57, of Houston, Texas as the woman shot and killed outside a hotel hours after dropping off her son at the U.S. Naval Academy.
“What turned out to be a celebratory occasion for the family – celebrating their son going into one of the best institutions in the U.S. – turned into a tragedy,” said Annapolis Police Chief Edward Jackson.
The woman and her husband were reportedly staying at an Annapolis hotel after dropping of their son at the academy.
The shooting happened at approximately 12:21 a.m. on June 29. Police said a preliminary investigation revealed Cummings was sitting in a patio area outside the hotel when she was struck by gunfire.
Cummings was not the intended target of the gunfire, police said.
Officers and paramedics who arrived at the scene attempted life saving measures, but Cummings was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This city’s heart is broken. Somebody has lost their mum on what was probably the proudest day of her life,” said Annapolis Mayor Gavin Buckley.
“There are no circumstances where this can be tolerated,” the mayor said.
Police in Annapolis are asking anyone with information regarding the deadly shooting to contact detectives at 410-260-3439.
