PEKIN (WEEK) – The Pekin Public Library is celebrating its 125th birthday by celebrating others, including a local woman who’s reached the century mark.

The library honored Harriet Harris during an event Wednesday that was called “Milestone Birthdays for 100-year olds.”

Harris shared stories about owning a successful business in Pekin, and the history of Downtown Pekin.

“The Pekin Library has a lot of tradition and history in the City of Pekin,” said Emily Lambe, the library’s public information and programming coordinator.

“It has evolved a lot over 125 years, and that’s what we wanted to celebrate is our place in the community now,” said Lambe.

The library will continue interviewing 100-year old residents. Their stories will be stored for people to see in the library’s local history room.
