PEORIA (WEEK) – Several people are without a home after a fire, apparently caused by discarded smoking materials, heavily damaged an apartment complex Wednesday afternoon in north Peoria.
The fire caused an estimated $200,000 damage to the Haymeadow Apartments at 5401 West Haymeadow Lane, the Peoria Fire Department said.
Firefighters got the call just about 3:55 p.m. There were no injuries.
First responders said they found heavy fire and smoke on the first floor, and flames spread to the attic. It took just under 30 minutes for firefighters to bring the fire under control, officials said.
Battalion Chief Scott Strum said investigators have listed the cause as accidental.
“We believe at this time it was discarded smoking material that got up in the attic, ran the attic and caught the exterior vinyl siding on fire,” said Strum.
The fire department said 10 residents needed housing after the fire.
