NEW YORK (AP) — A 57-year-old retired police officer was fatally shot and a 33-year-old man was wounded during an altercation outside a Brooklyn pizzeria, police said.
The fatal encounter started at about 7 p.m. when the 33-year-old man got into a verbal dispute with an 86-year-old man inside the pizza shop in the Kensington neighborhood, police said.
The retired police officer and a 53-year-old retired correction officer tried to intervene on behalf of the 86-year-old man, Deputy Chief Joseph Gulotta told reporters in a briefing at the scene.
The dispute moved outside, and at some point the retired correction officer drew his gun, police said. He fired one shot, striking the younger man in the arm and the retired police officer in the torso, they said.
Both gunshot victims were taken to a hospital, where the retired officer was pronounced dead. The 33-year-old man was in stable condition, Gulotta said.
Police did not release the names of any of the men involved, and no charges were immediately filed.
