SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. (AP) — A man has died in a shootout with police in western Nebraska following an hourslong standoff at a Scottsbluff home, authorities there said.
Officers were called to the home for reports of a man with a gun threatening to harm himself or others, Scottsbluff police said. There also were reports that shots had been fired at the home. No one else was inside the home, police said.
Officers were held at bay outside the home for nearly six hours as attempts by police and the man’s family to call him or communicate through a bullhorn were rebuffed, police said. After those attempts failed, police sent a team into the home to arrest the man, and police say he was shot when he fired on the officers.
The man, described only 47 years old, was taken to a local hospital, where he died. Police did not immediately release his name or the names of the officers involved.
Scottsbluff Police Chief Kevin Spencer told the Scottsbluff Star-Herald that no officers were injured in the shootout.
The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the shooting.
State law requires a grand jury investigation anytime someone dies in police custody or during an arrest.
