Al Jazeera: Reporter forcefully detained by Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) — A veteran correspondent for the Al Jazeera satellite channel is under observation in a hospital after Israeli police forcefully detained her while she was covering a demonstration in an embattled Jerusalem neighborhood. Her boss said Sunday that Givara Budeiri has suffered a broken arm and remains in the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem. Walid Omary says Budeiri was reporting from the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood when Israeli police asked for her identification despite the “press” markings on her body armor. Omary says Budeiri offered to retrieve the identification from her car. He says police refused and began pushing and shoving, eventually handcuffing and detaining her. Al Jazeera condemned the arrest as a violation of the rights of free media.
