OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) — A 15-year-old boy was fatally thrown from an SUV when the stolen vehicle crashed and overturned after a chase had ended, Louisiana State Police said.

A trooper had tried to stop the speeding Ford Explorer on U.S. Highway 167 shortly after 2 a.m. and chased it briefly, but slowed down because bad weather made the speed unsafe, according to a news release.

The driver and all four passengers were 15 or 16 years old, and the driver didn’t have a license, Trooper First Class Thomas Gossens said in an email.

The dead youth was identified as 15-year-old Trashawn Harrison of Abbeville.

Three other passengers suffered moderate injuries and police were looking for the driver, who ran away, the news release said.

Police said the SUV had left the road, hit a parked vehicle, overturned and hit a utility pole near the intersection with Louisiana Highway 749, about three miles north of Opelousas.

Police learned that the Explorer had been stolen from Abbeville hours before the crash.
