The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man shot and killed as 57-year-old Israel Trevino Jr. His son, 33-year-old Israel Trevino III, remains in the hospital with major injuries.
Deputies have arrested 60-year-old Joe Gomez Jr. and booked him in the Fresno County Jail. He is facing murder and attempted murder charges with a bail of over $1 million.
An argument between three men ended in the first murder of the year for the city of Parlier.
The shooting happened near the intersection of Parlier and Whitner Avenues in front of El Rancho Market
Investigators with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office say the gunman approached the two victims. An argument between the men was followed by gunfire.
Authorities say the suspect fired multiple rounds.
“The two men went down fairly quickly, and the person responsible fled the scene,” said Tony Botti, spokesperson for the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
A man in his 50s died at the scene.
His relative, a man in his 30s, was critically hurt and rushed to Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno with life-threatening injuries.
Parlier police officers were the first on the scene, but Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies are taking over the investigation.
“It appears that our two victims were targeted. There are no gang ties to this case whatsoever,” Botti said.
Acting Parlier police chief, David Cerda, says they have seen a recent spike in shootings.
In the last month, they have experienced between four to five.
“Anytime a tragedy like this strikes a community, it really has an impact,” said Cerda.
Cerda says he’ll do everything in his power to track down the suspect in this case and every other case in town.
“We are going to exhaust every resource that we have to continue to keep this community safe,” Cerda said.
Deputies are still working to determine the motive of the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
