SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego SWAT officers shot and killed an armed man who led officers on a car chase across the city before driving onto a high school campus and holing up inside a dumpster during an overnight standoff that ended.
The man was believed to be a fugitive wanted in connection with two shootings within the last month. Officers were trying to take him into custody when he took off in a vehicle with a female passenger and drove onto the San Diego High School campus. There, the man carrying a rifle ran and jumped into a dumpster with the woman, officials said.
San Diego police officials said that the man pushed the woman to the ground and she began screaming before police opened fire, fearing he would hurt her. The suspect was found dead, and the unidentified woman was not injured.
Police say the suspect is 36-year-old Christopher Marquez. He is suspected in the March 15 shooting of a bounty hunter who was trying to serve a felony warrant on Marquez at a home in Chula Vista, south of San Diego. Marquez also is suspected of shooting at police in nearby National City on April 5 during a traffic stop.
National City police said last week that Marquez was wanted on felony warrants for auto theft, hit-and-run, evading arrest and obstructing police.
The San Diego Unified School District said classes for San Diego High School, two other high schools nearby and San Diego City College would be held online.
