SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — A man was shot and killed in Springfield over the weekend, the seventh person injured by gunfire in the city in seven days, and the first one to die, authorities said.
Police responding to reports of a car crash at about 9 p.m. in the city’s Forest Park neighborhood found one of the drivers unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds, police spokesperson Ryan Walsh told Masslive.com.
The man was taken to Baystate Medical Center by ambulance where he later died. His name was not made public.
No arrests have been announced.
Six other people injured in three shootings last Thursday, Friday and March 20, are recovering from their wounds, police said. Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood said those three shootings are are all gang-related and may be connected.
It was not clear if homicide is tied to the other three shootings.
