1 inmate dies at Parchman, 1 dies at Central Mississippi

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The Mississippi Department of Corrections said that autopsies will be done on two inmates who were pronounced dead.
Mack Wilcher, 76, died in the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman, where he was serving life without parole. He was convicted of capital rape on June 17, 1996, in Scott County.
Willie Louis Lacey, 44, died in a clinic at Central Mississippi Correctional Facility. Lacey pleaded guilty last year to possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute in Wayne County. He was sentenced to five years on Nov. 13.
At least 22 Mississippi inmates have died this year, according to the Department of Corrections.
At least 106 Mississippi inmates died from late 2019 until the end of 2020. Several during outbursts of violence in late December 2019 and early January 2020. The U.S. Justice Department announced in February 2020 that it is investigating the state’s prison system.
