A teenager is dead after he was involved in a violent motor vehicle crash on Route 1A in East Boston , according to the victim’s mother.

Boston police said two vehicles collided just before 8:15 p.m. near the intersection of McClellan Highway and Addison Street. One of the vehicles slammed into a telephone pole and the other into a guardrail.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the pole was pronounced dead at the scene, he was identified by the DA’s office Thursday as 18-year-old Jonathan Hernandez. A female juvenile passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The victim’s family said he was a teenager, however police have not released his identity. A friend of the victim said the two people inside the car were boyfriend and girlfriend.

“Chaos,” one witness said.

“It’s really sad. Any car accident or situation like this is not a good thing, and if it affected a whole neighborhood to lose their power, that means it’s a pretty serious thing,” another witness said.”

Eric Danilchuk owns the body shop just feet from the crash scene.

“I saw the vehicle split in half,” he said. “We’re in the business of fixing cars, so if a car splits in half that thing is traveling pretty d— fast.”

Boston police said homicide and crash reconstruction teams responded to the crash.
