JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi Department of Corrections says autopsies will be done on two inmates who died during the past week.

Quintez Hodges, 40, was pronounced dead at the Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman. He was sentenced to death for capital murder on Sept. 13, 2001, in Lowndes County.

Wayne Humphrey, 50, died Sunday at Stone County Hospital in Wiggins. He was serving a 25-year sentence at the Stone County Regional Correctional Facility for convictions on residential burglary and unlawful touching of a child. He was sentenced Aug. 23, 2007, in Jackson County.

At least 18 Mississippi inmates have died this year, according to the Department of Corrections.

At least 106 Mississippi inmates died from late 2019 until the end of 2020. Several died during outbursts of violence in late December 2019 and early January 2020. The U.S. Justice Department announced in February 2020 that it is investigating the state’s prison system.
