Virginia Police said a 6-year-old boy was injured in a fatal accident on a yellow school bus in Williamsburg.

The accident occurred on South Fifth and Hopper streets around 8:30 a.m., according to police.

They say the school bus was carrying the victim’s 9-year-old brother at the time. Police say the 6-year-old was running to try and get on the bus and made a mistake in front of it when he was injured.

Police said the MTA bus driver found the boy lying in the street and called their dispatcher and 911.

The police have arrested the school bus driver who was still on his way. They say they initially believed the driver did not know that he had hit the child.

Police said the bus’s mechanical system was also being thoroughly checked.

They say they cooperate fully with the NYPD and assist their traumatized driver.

Neighbors say they are in shock. Mildred Peralta says she has lived in the area for 50 years and cannot imagine what the family is going through.

“As a parent, it hurts me so badly because any mother can’t even believe or imagine bringing a child into this world and this can happen,” Peralta says.
