An officer responded to the controversy by shooting and killing a gunman

A police officer in response to a dispute between a man and his ex-girlfriend shot and killed the man after he refused to throw a pistol into the basement of a home in eastern Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Lehigh County Prosecutor Jim Martin said the county forensic office at the Catasauqua home announced the death of Ryan Sherry, 27, following the shooting, which took place shortly after 2 pm.

Sherry and his father were at home with the woman caring for Sherry’s mother, Martin said. His ex-girlfriend called the police during an altercation that the older man described as “hot,” he said.
