Officials said a mother shot and killed five young children and then shot herself in West Virginia.
The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department has announced findings of an investigation into a fire that destroyed a home near Williamsburg, the area located 115 miles southeast of Charleston, West Virginia.
Officials said the fire “completely destroyed the house” and burned it completely.
Among the remains of the house, officials discovered the bodies of five children between the ages of 1 and 7, according to the sheriff’s administration. Later, the medical examiner retrieved rifle pellets from four of the children’s remains, and an X-ray showed the pellets inside the fifth child.
Also found was the body of 25-year-old Orinna Myers, a mother of three deceased children and stepmother of two others.
“Our moral fabric finds it unreasonable for a mother to harm her children or commit suicide,” Greenbrier County Sheriff Bruce Sloan said during a press conference.
Officials said they determined that Myers had set the fire on purpose, and that the deaths of the children were murders. The children have been identified as Heiken Girach Myers, Arikel Nova Myers, Kian Matthew Myers, Riley James Bumgarner and Shawn Dawson Bumgarner.
“We cannot determine why Oreanna Myers chose to end the lives of five children and then commit suicide,” Sloan said. “However, with all the facts and evidence obtained during this investigation and all the information obtained, this is what we have already concluded.”
