Authorities in the US Virgin Islands investigated the cause of a helicopter crash that killed at least four people.

The accident occurred at the western end of St. Thomas around Botany Bay, said Eric Akerson, a spokesperson for the Emergency Department. He said that officials have not yet disclosed the names of the dead.

The Virgin Islands Daily News reported that the Antilles school announced it was canceling classes because it is believed that an adult student and his family were in the helicopter. A school spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a message for comment.

Meanwhile, country singer Kenny Chesney identified one of the victims as the pilot Maria Rodriguez in his Instagram tribute, describing her as “a dear friend of mine and of our island community.” He added that he had traveled with her for more than 15 years.

Rodriguez owns two helicopter companies, and Obama’s plane flew in 2017 and has been praised for her work on its post-Hurricanes Irma and Maria mission. In 2018, she was awarded the ‘Pilot of the Year’ award by the International Helicopter Association.
