Two people, one of whom was an 8-year-old child, were killed after a man shot them in a house in Austell, Georgia, and then shot himself, according to Cobb County police.

The suspected gunman, 27-year-old Jeremy Mattis, is still in hospital with “apparently a gunshot wound,” police spokesman Sgt said. Wayne Delk said in a statement. It was last reported in critical condition

The fatal shooting occurred around 8:30 pm. Inside a home in the 900 block of Peel Castle Lane, Delk said. When the officers arrived, they found the child, and Dreon Mattis, 31, with gunshot wounds.

Delk said that Dryon Mattis was announced dead at the scene. The 8-year-old was taken to hospital where he died. His name has not been revealed.

Police did not confirm the relationship between the suspect and the victims.

The death of the 8-year-old was the latest in a series of high-profile shootings across the Atlanta metro that claimed the lives of young children over the past year.
