NEW DELHI – Several explosions at a private fireworks factory in southern India killed 11 workers and injured 34 others, police said.
Police officer Raj Narayanan said that the injured in the blast in the factory in Verodunagar district, Tamil Nadu state, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Ten firefighting vehicles have been called in to fight the blaze that destroyed four sheds at the factory.
The Press Trust of India news agency said the blasts occurred while workers were mixing chemicals to make fireworks.
Fireworks manufacturing is big business in India, as fireworks are often set off at festivals and weddings.
Many illegal factories produce cheaper fireworks when purchased from legal factories.
The area where the explosion occurred is located 520 km south of Chennai, the state capital.
