Police said two people were killed and another seriously injured when a 4×4 vehicle crashed along a Chicago highway, halting traffic for hours in the city’s South Side.

Illinois State Police said the SUV was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control and the vehicle hit a concrete barrier around 11 PM, overturned and suspended from a pole.

Police said firefighters took out the driver and passengers who were trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.

Police said that two people were taken to hospital before his death was announced, while a third was being treated for serious injuries.

Traffic stopped while emergency crews were operating at the scene of the accident, diverting vehicles around the scene. The state police closed all highway lanes but reopened them around 5:30 am.

Police said the accident was still under investigation.
