Las Vegas police said they shot and killed a man who had an exchange of fire with them after he barricaded in a burning apartment building.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said officers had responded to a report of local unrest at Milan Apartments Townhomes in south Las Vegas.
When they arrived, officers called a woman they found on the second floor of an apartment, to walk towards them. As it happened, the suspect got out of the apartment and shot one time with his firearm, said Metropolitan Police Capt. Sasha Larkin.
Law enforcement responded with gunfire, and the suspect entered the apartment. Police said the woman was safely removed from the scene.
Police said another exchange of fire ensued, and black smoke began rising from the apartment.
Clark County fire department workers extinguished most of the fire. Police said the Las Vegas Rapid Response Division officers then entered the apartment, where they found the suspect dead.
The man has yet to be identified, and it is not clear how he died.
Las Vegas police said they would name the officers who shot the man and release more details about the shootout at a later date.
