1 killed, 2 seriously hurt in fire in Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — One person was killed and two others were seriously hurt in a fire at a multifamily home in Lowell, fire officials said.

The fire that broke out at about 5:45 a.m. extended to two other structures, said Jennifer Mieth, a spokesperson for the state fire marshal.

The injured people had to be taken to Boston hospitals, she said.

No names were released.

The Salvation Army tweeted that 50 to 60 people were displaced by the fire, and that it was coordinating with the American Red Cross and the Lowell Fire Department to provide assistance.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by local and state authorities.
