Police said that a shooting attack during a large gathering at a hotel in the suburbs of Chicago killed one man and wounded several others.
The shooting took place during “some kind of big encounter” between guests at the Indian Lakes Hotel in Bloomingdale, according to Bloomingdale’s director of public safety Frank Giamares. He said that investigators were still gathering what happened, but “it looks like there are two different groups attending different events in the hotel” when, “something happened, and that’s when the shooting happened, mostly in the hotel corridors.”
People were fleeing the hotel when the officers arrived at around 2:35 am in response to news of gunfire on the fifth floor. The police said in a press release that the officers found “several apparently gunshot victims.”
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that James McGill Jr., 27, has died in hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner Office.
Giammaresi said that as many as six other people were injured by the gunfire, but the exact number is unknown because several people fled – including one or more potential suspects. He said that no police officers were shot.
He said there had been “persistent concerns” about large gatherings at the hotel in the recent past.
Located about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of downtown Chicago, the five-story Indian Lakes Hotel boasts 300 recently renovated rooms and more than 7,000 square feet (650 square meters) of event space, according to the resort’s website.
