Police suspect a 36-year-old man killed his 9-year-old daughter before killing himself in the northwestern suburb of Lake Villa, Illinois
The two officers were found dead around 2:15 p.m. Inside the man’s house in Building 100 of Briar Ridge Lane, according to Christopher Covelli, a spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
Police visited the house after the girl’s mother told them that her daughter had been reported to be absent from school, and that she was unable to reach the father after the girl spent the night at his home, Covelli said.
Covelli said that while an autopsy has not yet been conducted, initial information indicates that the man committed suicide after killing his daughter, and police are investigating the incident as a murder and suicide.
“This is a very tragic set of circumstances and my condolences to the child’s family. I want to reassure the Lake Villa community that there is no evidence indicating a threat to the public,” Lake Villa Police Chief Craig Somerville said.
The accident is still under investigation, and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the cause of death.
