A rare painting by Italian Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli sold for $ 92.2 million at an auction organized by Sotheby’s in New York.
The painting “Yang Man Holding Arundel” or “The Young Man Holding a Medallion” is one of about a dozen of Botticelli’s known paintings that have survived to this day.
Botticelli’s two large paintings, “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera”, are on display at the Uffici Gallery in Florence.
“Sotheby’s” said that it was one of the most important and most valuable paintings ever to appear at auction, noting that the amount for which it was sold is a world record for the work of the Italian artist.
The auction was conducted by organizers over the phone and the Internet, and the identity of the buyer was not known.
