Officials said six people were killed and dozens were being assessed after a chemical leak at a food processing plant in Gainesville.

Hall County Fire Services and Gainesville Police responded at approximately 10:12 am to the Foundation Food Group building, formerly known as Prime Pak Foods, located off Memorial Drive to a large-scale HAZMAT situation.

During a press conference, officials at the Hull County Fire Department said there was a leak of liquid nitrogen at the facility. The authorities confirmed the death of six people and transferred 12 others to hospital, three of them in critical condition.

Authorities said 130 individuals were subjected to assessment.

The entire Memorial Park Drive from Browns Bridge Road to the Atlanta Highway is closed. Motorists were asked to avoid the area and use alternative roads.

Gainesville Police said they were aiding the Hull County Fire Services by monitoring traffic.

Governor Brian Kemp issued a statement regarding the person, offering condolences and assuring that state agencies are helping with the domestic response and investigations.
